Many women 40+ feel like they have lost themselves after years of caring for everyone else. The way back is not trying harder. It starts with feeling safe in your body, then building trust in yourself one small step at a time. Conde Bartlett's free Becoming Her workshop shows you how.

When Did I Stop Feeling Like Me?

Maybe it hits you on a quiet morning. You're making coffee. The house is still. And a question floats up out of nowhere.

When did I stop feeling like me?

You're not sad, exactly. You're not falling apart. From the outside, life looks fine. But inside, something feels far away. Like you've been living on autopilot for years and just now noticed.

If that sounds familiar, I want you to know something. You are not broken. And you are not alone. I hear this from women 40+ every single week. It's one of the most common things women tell me when we first meet.

The good news? The woman you used to be is still there. And the woman you're becoming is waiting for you too.

Why Do Women Lose Touch With Themselves in Midlife?

Most women don't lose themselves all at once. It happens slowly, one role at a time.

You became a mom. A partner. A caregiver for your parents. The one at work everyone counts on. Each role asked a little more of you. And without meaning to, you put your own needs at the bottom of the list.

Then midlife arrives, and life starts to shift. Maybe it looks like:

  • A divorce or the end of a long relationship

  • Kids leaving home and a house that feels too quiet

  • A career change, a layoff, or a job that no longer fits

  • Perimenopause or menopause changing how you feel in your body

  • Caring for aging parents or saying goodbye to them

These changes shake the ground under your feet. The roles that once told you who you were start to fall away. And when they do, you look around and wonder who's left.

That's not a crisis. It's an invitation. It's your chance to meet yourself again.

Why Trying Harder Doesn't Work

When we feel lost, most of us try to fix it the way we fix everything else. We make a plan. We read the books. We push harder.

But you can't think your way back to yourself.

Here's why. After years of stress and putting others first, your body learns to stay on high alert. It's always scanning for the next thing to handle. When you live in that state, it's hard to hear your own voice. It's hard to trust your gut. It's hard to dream.

That's why emotional safety comes first. When your body feels calm and safe, your mind can relax. Then you can start to hear what you really want. Self-trust grows from there.

So the first step isn't doing more. It's slowing down long enough to feel safe in your own skin again.

Simple Ways to Start Coming Home to Yourself

You don't need a big life overhaul to begin. Small, gentle steps work best. Here are a few you can try today.

1. Take three slow breaths. Breathe in through your nose for a count of four. Let it out slowly through your mouth. Do this three times. It tells your body you're safe.

2. Try tapping. Tapping, also called EFT, means gently tapping on points on your face and body while you name what you feel. It helps calm stress fast. Start by tapping on the side of your hand and saying, "Even though I feel lost right now, I'm open to finding my way back."

3. Ask yourself one question. Each morning, ask, "What do I need today?" Then listen. Even if the answer is small, honor it.

4. Notice what lights you up. Pay attention to the moments you feel like yourself. A song. A walk. A good laugh with a friend. Those are clues.

These steps may feel simple. That's the point. Calm and self-trust are built in small moments, not big leaps.
